Sandra Ortega made history on July 4, 1958, when she became the the nation’s first African American woman directly commissioned as a U.S. Air Force officer. She earned a doctorate in sociology and served in a variety of positions that took her all over the world. As a civilian, Sandra served in the Federal Women’s Program and created the Air Force International Spouse Support program.
