Joe Foto grew on Bourbon Street, New Orleans, and served as a waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator in the 15th Air Force. On his 5th mission on December 18, 1944, his plane was hit, and he bailed out over Yugoslavia. There, Joe joined dozens of other members of U.S. B-24 bomber crews who has jumped into the Yugoslavian wilderness. Author Charles Stanley, Jr., has captured their stories and the story in his book, Lost Airmen: The Epic Rescue of WWII U.S. Bomber Crews Stranded Behind Enemy Lines, and he joins us with Joe to share the true story of hungry soldiers journeying across the blizzard-swept Dinaric Alps during the worst winter of the Twentieth Century.
