Louis R. Woods served in the U.S. Navy in the Armed Guard in World War II. His family recently discovered this interview, conducted by Louis’s grandson circa 1999. In the interview, Louis discusses Boot Camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Armed Guard School at Gulport, Mississippi, and then sea duty aboard merchant ships. Louis served on the S.S. William M. Eastland and S.S. Richmond Mumford Pearson, Liberty Ships that delivered weapons, equipment, ammunition, and other cargo to North Africa, Italy, France, the Philippines, and other locations in the Pacific. “They were the hardest months of my life,” he observes.
