Today we bring you a shocking Scuttlebutt Short! The US Navy conducted its first shock trials of an aircraft carrier in 34 years during a recent three-day exercise off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida. We’re here with retired Navy veteran Dave Jackel to take a look at these videos and break down exactly what’s happening. The aircraft carrier, Gerald R. Ford was exposed to three separate detonations that were brought successively closer each round. The third of which had a yield of 40,000-pounds and when detonated registered a 3.9 magnitude earthquake. No major casualties, fires, or flooding were reported. From here, the ship will undergo maintenance and repairs in Newport News, Virginia before its maiden voyage scheduled for the spring of 2022. Tune in!
