VBC Vietnam Veteran Sonny Hanlon was recently recognized for his 30 years of service to a wonderful Pittsburgh non-profit called Animal Friends. He’s come to VBC events over the years to let our other veterans know about Animal Friends’ special outreach to veterans, providing comprehensive adoption and resource support program for vets and their pets. Thank you, Sonny, for your service, to our veteran community!
PITTSBURGH, PA — On Sunday, January 4, Animal Friends proudly honored a Ross Township resident whose life has been defined by courage, compassion and an unwavering commitment to others. The 2025 Animal Friends Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Sonny (Joseph) Hanlon, a volunteer, advocate, veteran and friend whose impact on our organization and our community is immeasurable.
Sonny’s dedication to service began long before his involvement with Animal Friends. From 1966 to 1968, he served as a United States Army Specialist Fourth Class during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. That experience gave him a deep understanding of sacrifice—and of the challenges many veterans carry with them long after returning home. It is this understanding that has guided Sonny’s work ever since.
For more than 30 years, Sonny and his wife Lynne have supported Animal Friends. In 2014, when our Animal Friends’ veterans program was just beginning, Sonny stepped forward as one of its earliest champions and became an inaugural member of the Veterans Ambassadors Council. From that moment on, he emerged as the warm, steady heartbeat of our outreach to veterans across the region.
Those who have encountered Sonny in the community know how memorable he is. Often wearing his “Vietnam Veteran” Stetson hat, Sonny has a way of making instant, genuine connections—whether at a VFW hall, a veterans event, a shelter function or even during everyday errands around town. He listens. He understands. And veteran to veteran, human to human, he shares how the bond with a companion animal can bring comfort, purpose and healing.
In just the past year and a half, Sonny has participated in at least 37 outreach events and personally spoken with an estimated 1,174 people about Animal Friends for Veterans. Over the years, we estimate he has reached more than 10,500 veterans. But Sonny’s legacy is not defined by numbers alone—it is defined by lives changed.
There is the veteran from Beaver who returned to Animal Friends last June hoping to adopt. He couldn’t recall the program’s name but he vividly remembered “the man in the cowboy hat” who had spoken with him months earlier. That memory brought him back.
There is George, who came to Animal Friends after losing his mother and searching for a companion for the first time in decades. He remembered Sonny by name after meeting him at the West View VFW—and trusted him.
And there is Patrick. Sonny didn’t just help Patrick adopt his dog Zulu—he helped him rebuild his life. From offering friendship and guidance to helping Patrick prepare for Animal Friends’ Black Tie & Tails gala, Sonny stood beside him during a pivotal time. Today, Patrick is thriving personally and professionally—and Sonny remains a constant presence in his life.
These stories reflect a simple truth: When Sonny Hanlon meets someone, he truly sees them—and they never forget it.
The Animal Friends Lifetime Achievement Award honors an individual whose dedication has shaped our programs, strengthened our community and changed lives—both human and animal. Reserved for those who have served Animal Friends’ mission and vision for at least 20 years, the award recognizes the tenacity, compassion and strength of character required to devote one’s life to advancing animal welfare.
In our 82-year history, this award has been bestowed on only a few individuals. Like those who came before him, Sonny Hanlon embodies our founding beliefs and has improved the lives of thousands of animals and people throughout our region.
Because of Sonny, the Animal Friends for Veterans program is stronger. Our Veterans Ambassadors Council is stronger. And our community is more compassionate.
We are deeply grateful for Sonny Hanlon’s lifetime of service and honored to celebrate his extraordinary legacy.
