Join the Veterans Breakfast Club and the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown for a special public luncheon lecture with historian Todd DePastino, who will bring to life the dramatic story of the Berlin Airlift of 1948–49, one of the most daring humanitarian efforts in American history.
For nearly a year after World War II, US and British Air Forces defied the odds and flew over a quarter-million missions to deliver food, fuel, medicine, and supplies to a blockaded West Berlin—entirely by air. Most believed it couldn’t be done. Even President Truman’s top military advisors urged him not to try. But the effort succeeded—and in doing so, showed the world the best of what America stood for. The Airlift also marked the beginning of the Cold War, as Europe was split in two and tensions between East and West deepened.
Todd DePastino is founder and executive director of the Veterans Breakfast Club and author of the award-winning Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front and six other books. A dynamic speaker with a Ph.D. in history from Yale, Todd has a gift for making the past come alive with insight, humor, and humanity.
