written by GAO
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is asking VBC members to participate in a short interview about open-air burning (for example, burn-barrel latrines or burn pits) if they are a veteran who was deployed on land or at sea outside of the U.S. to the Vietnam theater (Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos) between 1955 and 1975. GAO’s report about open-air burning in the Vietnam theater will be publicly available on its website and sent to Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Department of Defense. See below for more information about the study and GAO’s contact information to schedule an interview.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO)
is an independent, nonpartisan, federal agency that does research for Congress. Congress has requested that GAO study the health outcomes, including an assessment of the data available, of veterans exposed to open-air burning (for example, burn barrels, burn-out latrines, and burn pits) during the Vietnam War.
WHY WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU
We are asking volunteers to participate in a short interview with GAO staff if they are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces who was deployed on land or at sea outside of the U.S. to the Vietnam-theater (Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos) between November 1, 1955, and May 7, 1975.
Your voice matters. We want Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to hear directly from you so they can better understand your experiences during and after the Vietnam War.
HOW WE PLAN TO USE YOUR RESPONSES
Your responses will be anonymous, and we will not report on any information that could be used to identify you. For example, we plan to report summaries of responses (e.g., “X percentage of respondents reported Y”). We may include individual responses as illustrative examples in our final report, but we will not include your name or any other identifying information.
When complete, the report will be publicly available on our website (www.gao.gov).
Schedule a Phone Interview
VietnamBurnPits@gao.gov or by phone at 202-512-5624 if you are interested in sharing your experience with open-air burning during the Vietnam War.
The interview should take approximately 20 minutes.
We look forward to hearing from you and getting your perspective on this important issue. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.
