Photos by Gary Yon

Rarely do we post photos of our recent VBC storytelling events, but, then again, we don’t usually have a photographer of Gary Yon’s caliber taking them.

Gary joined us once again at Grist House Brewing in Millville, PA, near Pittsburgh, for our annual VBC Burgers & Craft Beer event. Gary’s photos capture the fun of the evening and the great atmosphere and conviviality that make the night special.

We heard from all branches of service for our one-hour program. George Skivington talked about the intricate ballet on the deck of the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in the 1970s.

Larry Woods spoke about how his job in USAF Security Forces in Tuy Hoa, Vietnam belied the stereotype about the “chair force.”

Ben Wright told the story of flying one of the final fixed wing aircraft out of Saigon on April 28, 1975. Carlo Medina recalled joining the Army National Guard in 1999 to pay for college, having no idea he’s be a combat commander in Iraq just five years later.

Mike Evanish, retired Commander of the Coast Guard, explained how life changed dramatically for his branch of service after September 11, 2001.

Bill Taylor, Vietnam Marine, told some colorful stories, mostly about his post-Vietnam post in the nation’s capital.

And Army veteran George Millerschoen reminded us all about the Cold War–the war that wasn’t a war–and how he fought it working at Nike and Hercules Missile Command sites throughout the country, including the Pittsburgh region.

We’re grateful for the food served by Smashery and the beer and softy drinks provided by Grist House Brewing.

Rohrich Automotive supported the event with a sponsorship, as did Steel River Techs.

And Gary Yon, the man behind the camera, generously spent much of the eventing capturing the conversation and fellowship. Thank you, Gary!Gary Yon Photography, Gary took photos at the VBC Burgers & Craft Beer event
