Can military records heal family wounds? In this emotional episode of the Veterans Breakfast Club series, historian and professional military records researcher Beth Reuschel of Reuschel Research shares the remarkable story of helping a client, John Myers, uncover the hidden wartime heroism of his estranged father, WWII veteran Sgt. Ervin Myers. John grew up with little knowledge of his father, whom he only knew as an alcoholic absent from his life. But everything changed when Beth, after a chance meeting at the Honor Flight Summit, dug into the archives and began piecing together Sgt. Myers’ service in Company L, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. Through careful research and serendipitous connections, Beth uncovered accounts of Sgt. Myers’ bravery in battle, his repeated wounds, and a heroic stand in Osweiler, Luxembourg that saved his men’s lives. What began with a simple draft card ended in a pilgrimage across Europe, emotional healing for a son, and a restoration of a legacy nearly lost to history.
