If you served in the Navy or Coast Guard since 1973, you’ve watched Trial by Fire, a harrowing 18-minute, 44-second film of the USS Forrestal (CV-59) disaster of July 29, 1967. Trial by Fire is a training film shown to all recruits, but it’s so well-written and the footage so raw and compelling, it’s become a classic. It doesn’t flinch in depicting the glaring errors that sparked the catastrophe and made it worse. Watch it before tonight’s VBC Happy Hour featuring veterans who lived through the USS Forrestal fire. It will give you a vivid view of what happened in 1967 and why it hasn’t happened since.
