For the second year in a row, photographer Ed Zirkle kindly traveled from Ohio to capture the action and great spirit of our Veterans Breakfast Club celebration at the Rivers Casino. This year, we had a brief lesson in Bosun’s Piping, some discussion of the Korean War and subsequent defenders of Korea, some remarks from 99-year-old D-Day veteran Warren Goss, and a heartfelt welcome and tribute from our hero, Rocky Bleier.

The highlight of the morning was the inspiring message from Paralympian and Marine Veteran Eric McElvenny, who lost his right leg in 2011 while leading a patrol in Afghanistan. An IED explosion changed his life. Eric not only didn’t let the injury get in his way. He said it was the event that has propelled his growth as a father, husband, citizen, and human being.

While recovering in a Naval hospital, McElvenny set an ambitious goal: he would complete an Ironman race. With support from the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), he trained intensely, overcoming obstacles with his prosthetic equipment that caused pain, blisters, and even infections. He struggled to find the right prosthetics for each leg of the triathlon—a specialized running leg and a cycling leg. His persistence paid off, and in October 2013, McElvenny completed his first Ironman in Kona, Hawaii, finishing the grueling race in 11 hours and 54 minutes.

Since then, he has completed eight Ironman triathlons, including several in Kona, which is known for its challenging course and tough conditions. McElvenny’s journey continued at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics and in Paris 2024.

Eric’s story is not just about athleticism but also resilience and commitment. As a motivational speaker, he shares his journey across the country, teaching the importance of persistence and adaptability. His message inspires others, especially those facing challenges, to push their limits and redefine what’s possible.

We’re grateful to Eric and all who attended to support this event. We’re also indebted to our Premier Event Sponsor, Tobacco Free Adagio Health and UPMC for Life.

Also supporting the event were to Krise Transportation, Gallagher Home Health, Dignity Memorial and VITAS.

And, of course, Ed Zirkle, the man behind the camera, who captured the conversation and fellowship. Thank you, Ed!
