Description

During World War II, the Victor Insulator Company designed a sturdy, non-slip coffee mug for the US Navy. It was a mug produced according to military specifications to endure the rigors of life aboard a ship. Its heavy, thick walls and concave sides provided added sturdiness, while the rough, unfinished ring on the base—a result of the manufacturing process—gripped swaying galley tables. After the war, the mug became a staple of American diners, where its robustness made it ideal for high-traffic, heavy-use environments. It remains an icon of American popular style and design ingenuity.
