Dick Guenther

Dick Guenther entered the US Army in February 1943. He was an infantryman in the 3rd Army and fought in Northern France. He landed on Utah Beach, Normandy on July 1 as a replacement. Before leaving the Army, he received the Purple Heart among other medals.

Age 92, of Castle Shannon, on Monday, May 8, 2017. Beloved husband of Bernice for 69 years; father of Claire (Ed), of Duquesne Heights, Rick (Ruth), of Saskatoon, SK, and Dan (Renee), of Charlotte, NC; brother of the late Bob (Helen); also survived by nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Rich was a letter carrier for over 40 years. He was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the retired men’s group and served as an usher. Rich was also on the committee of Boy Scout Troup 228, did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and Interfaith Hospitality Network, and was a 50 year member of NARFE (retired federal employees) and the Dormont Masonic Lodge #684. He also belonged to American Legion Post #490. He served in World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was a kind and thoughtful person devoted to his family and many friends. A memorial service (date to be determined) will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park, PA 15102. Interment will be in the Church Columbarium with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Duquesne Heights Christian Church, Shaler and Rutledge St., Pittsburgh, PA 15211.
