Herb Hatfield

Herb Hatfield entered the US Navy in December 1945 as a plank gunner, and member of the original crew, aboard the USS Valley Forge (CV-45) and served until 1947.

Age 84, of Bloomfield, on Saturday, November 30, 2013. Beloved husband of 60 years to Dolores “Dolly” (Dutchman) Hatfield; loving father of Timothy (Ellen) Hatfield of Allison Park and Gregory (Cynthia) Hatfield of Penn Hills; devoted grandfather of Lauren (Zach) Taylor, Jocelyn Hatfield and Joshua Hatfield; brother of the late Edith Feldman and Ethel Aupperle; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Herb was a World War II veteran, who served in the U.S. Navy and was an original crew member of the U.S.S. Valley Forge. He was a retiree of the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education. Herb was one of the founders of the St. Paul Cathedral Bingo. He was a member of the American Legion, Sharpsburg Post #106 and was a longtime volunteer at St. Margaret Hospital and at the VA Medical Center (Aspinwall). Family and Friends received at the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 216 44th Street, on Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul Cathedral on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Allegheny Cemetery.
